CQ Politics: Djou is "best candidate in a decade" -- district no longer "safe" for Dems
By Andrew Walden @ 9:14 PM :: 10702 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics
|
Republicans have their best candidate in a decade running for this seat. Djou has been fundraising for this race since early 2008, when it was correctly rumored that Abercrombie would leave his House seat open to run for governor. National Republicans already have taken note of Djou and aired advertisements in the heavily Democratic district.

HGEA vs HSTA: The coming legislative budget crisis
By Andrew Walden @ 8:27 PM :: 11222 Views :: Energy, Environment
|
In the HSTA/Kanu Hawaii playbook, Furlough Friday, October 23, 2009 was supposed to be the day they seized control of the debate on how to solve the Hawaii budget crisis. The Legislature was supposed to announce that they had a majority of both houses lined up to demand a special session. But other government employees' unions got in the way.

Lingle: DoE Superintendent should be appointed by next Governor
By Andrew Walden @ 11:01 PM :: 13926 Views :: Energy, Environment
|
Grabbing the political high ground on a day union operatives had sought to shape debate as a choice between tax increases and cutbacks, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle this morning announced her intention to propose a constitutional amendment which would transfer control of the State Department of Education from the existing Board of Education and make the DoE into a cabinet-level department headed by an appointed Superintendent. Promisingly, her proposal was immediately endorsed by Rep Neil Abercrombie, the leading Democratic gubernatorial candidate.

Last-minute donation: Rail contractor gave to Hannemann Campaign
By Andrew Walden @ 2:08 AM :: 12364 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment
|
It wasn't easy to find in the thicket of engineering firms, architects, consultants, and legions of wanna-be rail subcontractors who suddenly became big financial backers of Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann's campaign right about the time he started promoting rail transit, but the first company awarded a rail construction contract--Kiewit Pacific--is indeed represented among Hannemann's contributors.

Furloughs: How Unions and the DoE aim to co-opt protesting parents
By Andrew Walden @ 4:24 AM :: 16939 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment
|
The HSTA and the DoE worked hard to make Hawaii public schools' 17 furlough days as chaotic and inconvenient a possible. Their goal: gin up pressure for tax increases. But in order to do this they need an ally--a group which provides the illusion of being independent of the HSTA and DoE. They have found it in the form of "KanuHawaii.org", a group headquartered on Bishop Street tied to the firm "3 Point Consulting."

Imagined Ethnicity: Wahiawa beauty queen pens plea to Obama

This past Friday October 9, 2009, I was honored to be crowned Miss Hampton University 2009-2010. It truly was the best night of my life! With that being said, I am sad to say that my crowning was not widely accepted and many negative comments regarding my win have been shared throughout my campus.
It would be much easier to say that possibly some were not accepting of the news because I wasn't the most qualified contestant; however, the true reason for the disapproval was because of the color of my skin. I am not African American.

Star-Bulletin comes out against voter registration drive
By Andrew Walden @ 8:32 PM :: 26328 Views :: First Amendment, Office of Elections, Religion
|
After years of pretending to be concerned about Hawaii's worst-in-the-nation voter participation, today the Honolulu Star-Bulletin has shown its true colors.
In an editorial titled "Religion risky for GOP", SB editors condemn a church-based statewide voter registration drive. They complain bitterly that, "...the goal is to convince 80 percent of Christian churchgoers to register to vote and then persuade 80 percent of those who register to vote...."
This contrasts sharply with the Star-Bulletin July 21, 2009 which cried, "Hawaii dead last in voter turnout."

Hawaii budget crisis: Adult Supervision vs Team Chaos
By Andrew Walden @ 7:10 PM :: 10918 Views :: Energy, Environment
|
In spite of widespread anger by public school parents, few legislators have joined the call by former tax cheat and Lt Gov candidate Gary Hooser for a special session. But that is not the only game in town. While the mayors stall for time, the UHPA has rejected the UH system’s contract offer--unsurprising since Dan Inouye's handpicked UH system President is a poster girl for profligacy. UHPA boss AJ Musto, now calls for the legislature to return to session and enact tax increases. They will head to arbitration. The UPW is refusing to engage in serious negotiations, also insisting on arbitration—a strategy designed to bring a December arbitration ruling which will deliver the problem to the next legislative session in January.
Every bit of this game is about next year’s gubernatorial election.

Dishonorable Watada: Military should overthrow Congress, President
By Andrew Walden @ 10:40 AM :: 11384 Views :: Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics
|
Watada implicitly calls for the United States Armed Forces to impose its will on the elected civilian leadership of the nation saying, "If soldiers realized this war is contrary to what the Constitution extols – if they stood up and threw their weapons down – no president could ever initiate a war of choice again."
Watada closes by calling on soldiers to stop "allowing" the U.S. government this liberty. "Those who called for war prior to the invasion compared diplomacy with Saddam to the compromises made with Hitler. I say, we compromise now by allowing a government that uses war as the first option instead of the last to act with impunity."

Hawaii Islam Day organizers celebrate with brand new excuse for holding event on September 11 Julian
By Andrew Walden @ 10:00 PM :: 7024 Views :: Energy, Environment
|
![](http://www.hawaiifreepress.com/Main/Portals/0/Article%20Attachments/Julian%20Gregorian%20Calendar%20Sept%202009.jpg)
Its late in the game, but Hakim Ouansafi, head of the Muslim Association of Hawaii has yet another excuse for steering the Legislature to celebrate Islam Day on September 24, 2009--a day which just happens to correspond to September 11, 2009 in the old Julian calendar. Talking to the Honolulu Advertiser, Ouansafi says: "Yesterday was selected because it marked the end of Ramadan...."
But a quick glance at an Islamic calendar shows that Ramadan ended on September 19, 2009. The next day, Eid al-Fitr, September 20 is an important annual Islamic feast day. There is nothing significant about September 24.

Abdellah was, described October 25, 1993 by the New York Times, as the “most aggressively combative of the lawyers” representing the terrorists who staged the 1993 World Trade Center attacks. His client, the Egyptian-born Mahmud Abouhalima, was convicted of helping to manufacture and transport the bomb detonated in the 1993 attack and is now incarcerated in the Federal "Supermax" prison at Florence, Colorado.

SB: Why are we in Afghanistan? (Debunked)
By Andrew Walden @ 12:52 PM :: 8804 Views :: Military
|
Wash Times: Unfortunately, the most important strategic factor is the same: a liberal Congress working to undermine the U.S. war effort. The U.S. military had won the Vietnam conflict by 1970, but when Democrats in Congress cut aid to South Vietnam in 1974, our trusting allies in Saigon were left helpless before the communist onslaught. Mr. Obama might want to consult with Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. on the spirit of those times. Mr. Biden was a freshman senator and one of the cosponsors of the Case-Church Amendment, which stopped aid to Cambodia and opened the way for the Khmer Rouge takeover and the killing fields that followed.
(And Neil Abercrombie at UH Manoa was one of the hippie protesters who helped Biden make the Pol Pot killing fields possible.)

Defeating the "homelessness industry" before it gets a grip on Hawaii
By Andrew Walden @ 12:17 PM :: 22145 Views :: Honolulu County, Homelessness, Tourism
|
The ACLU is threatening a lawsuit against the City of Honolulu after the City Council voted to ban sleeping on sidewalks. Today's Star-Bulletin editorializes:
Councilman Charles Djou introduced the bill because of concerns about how the homeless sleeping on Waikiki sidewalks is affecting tourism. Djou maintains that refusing to allow the chronically homeless to sleep on sidewalks would "put the hammer on people getting the help they need."
Djou needs to cite a precedent where such tough compassion has actually worked.
The answer is embarrassingly simple: Los Angeles.
This leads to an obvious question the Star-Bulletin editorialists must answer:
Where has your laissez-faire attitude towards homelessness ever produced anything but more homelessness?

Raycom Honolulu TV Deal: Honolulu Community Media Council has its own issues with "media control"
By Andrew Walden @ 1:13 PM :: 16038 Views :: First Amendment, Higher Education, Obama

The Honolulu Community Media Council (HCMC) is working with Georgetown University attorneys from the so-called "Institute for Public Representation" to challenge the Raycom Media deal linking the news operations of KGMB, KHNL and KFVE.
According the the HCMC, the Raycom deal is "nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to avoid regulatory scrutiny by the FCC and that Raycom will exercise control over all three stations in defiance of the FCC ownership rules."
But the Honolulu Community Media Council has its own decades-long history of "thinly veiled attempt(s)" to "exercise control" over the media....

The Democrats’ electoral strategy for 2010 is an attempt to manufacture chaos knowing it is Lingle who “needs to make the tough call." Kennedy legacy: Black voters joining the Democratic Party
By Andrew Walden @ 10:31 PM :: 5599 Views :: National News, Ethics
|
The Kennedys are largely responsible for making African Americans dependent on an alliance with liberal Democrats. The result--highly unstable in a democratic society -- 90% of black voters regularly pull the Democrat lever.
The 90% solid black vote tips the balance in favor of Democrats in Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, and Maryland. Without these votes, Democrats would simply cease to function as a national party. Without the Kennedys around to check anti-black electoral dynamics within the Democrats' ranks, it is an open question as to how much longer this arrangement can continue. The end of the dynasty could mark the beginning of the liberation of black voters from dependency on government.

The headlines are encouraging: The AP reports, “White House appears ready to drop ‘public option’.” Politico reads, “White House backs away from public health care option.” And the front page of USA Today says, “Obama may drop public option in health care.” These headers all stem from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ comment on CNN Sunday Morning that the public option “is not the essential element” of President Barack Obama’s health care plan. The Depleted Uranium Scam
By Andrew Walden @ 7:53 AM :: 18214 Views :: Environment, Military
|
If the Big Square Building comprises 100,000 square feet weighing 100 pounds per square foot, and that weight were made up of equal parts drywall, brick, and cement, the ten-million-pound building contains about 42 pounds of non-depleted uranium and 63 pounds of radioactive thorium.
Jim Albertini of the misnamed Malu-Aina Peace Center writes March 27, “We must not tolerate having any depleted uranium in our environment….” By this logic the legislature should immediately be shut down and quarantined as a toxic waste dump.

By Andrew Walden @ 7:06 PM :: 27407 Views :: Hawaii County , Maui County, Health Care
|
Originally published July, 2007, this article outlines the effect of government-controlled health care on Hawaii. Since Hawaii's system has been pointed to as a model for socialized health care, other Americans may be interested to learn the fate which awaits them.
In the wake of a heated fight over construction of a privately funded hospital on Maui, the Hawaii Health Services Corporation (HHSC) is moving to improve its facilities by agreeing to provide Hawaii patients with equipment available in some African hospitals....

US Secret Service looks at alleged coup plotters: "Birthers' Queen Bee” could lose law license
By Andrew Walden @ 4:44 PM :: 10768 Views :: Obama
|
“Birtherism” is more than a wacky conspiracy theory. Dentist/lawyer Orly Taitz, dubbed the Birther “Queen Bee”, is facing a disbarment complaint filed anonymously in California--the only state in which she is admitted to the Bar. The first paragraph of the complaint reads as follows:
“A California attorney has decided that President Obama is ineligible to be President, and has taken on the mission of removing him from office – by force if necessary. On at least two occasions, she has openly called for armed rebellion by the military, to arrest and imprison the elected President.”

CNN Chief is source of latest "Birther" claim
By Andrew Walden @ 1:51 PM :: 12198 Views :: Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics
|
And so the Democrat media boss Klein, head of CNN's US operations, is now creating and spreading a new false claim about Obama's birth certificate--that Hawaii has destroyed all paper records.
CNN talkers under Klein -- including Paul Begala and James Carville -- are part of a daily conference call led by Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Is Klein also on that call? Has the White House asked for the upsurge in Birther coverage in order to mask the collapse of Obamacare in Congress? Don't hold your breath for reporters to ask Klein this question.

Don't be fooled: Obama was Born in Hawaii
By Andrew Walden @ 4:42 PM :: 11520 Views :: Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics
|
(New audio debate: Walden vs Berg on Tennessee radio station.)
(Notice how the Obama media has suddenly chosen to focus on the birthers just as Obama's socialized health care scheme falls apart in Congress? Precisely as this writer has explained again and again, the "birthers" are very helpful to Obama. He uses them to portray his opponents as loons. He also uses them as a cudgel against any investigation of his past or his associations.)
Led by 9-11 trooothers like Pennsylvania Democrat Phil Berg, the scammers claiming that Barack Obama was born outside the US are continuing to work day and night to divert Obama's opponents into useless tin-foil-hat conspiracy theories. Every day they come up with a distracting new lie.
As Obama's hero Saul Alinsky explains: “The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength.”

Sunshine law gets teeth—Council reorganization ordered
By Andrew Walden @ 3:11 PM :: 8655 Views :: Hawaii County , Ethics
|
Suddenly the Sunshine law has teeth. Ruling late Thursday, Judge Ronald Ibarra has effectively outlawed the Hawaii County Council’s controversial June 16 reorganization. Judge Ibarra, who oversaw the Hokulia case, further ruled that the council is temporarily enjoined “from taking any further action except to conduct further reorganization.”
According to the plaintiff’s attorney, this is the first time that a court in Hawaii has enjoined a legislative body from functioning.
