Budget negotiations: House GOP votes itself pay cut--calls on Dems to follow suit
By News Release @ 9:39 AM :: 7411 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment

HONOLULU – House Republican Leader Lynn Finnegan is urging the Democrat majority legislature to follow the leadership example made by 42 executive branch heads in addressing the state’s growing budget gap.  In addition to the 5% reduction of pay implemented by Act 85 at the start of July, House Republicans unanimously decided to take a voluntary pay cut equivalent to a two day furlough effective August 1, 2009 – fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010.

“Yesterday both House and Senate convened a special session to override 34 vetoes and chose to ignore the deficit. The override of the measures that require State funding are outside of the current shortfall,”  says Finnegan.

"Personally this will be a hardship on my family, but I realize the outcome of negotiations will be hard for many of Hawaii's families too, ” states Republican Leader Finnegan.
