Breaking down the walls for progress

Aloha and welcome to Monday,

Today, as you know, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We celebrate a truly heroic leader in our nation’s history who left an indelible impression on America in terms of our beliefs about equality, fairness, civil rights and justice. It’s hard to have a conversation about the real heroes that have lived in our country’s past without talking about MLK.

In Hawaii, we are fortunate to have such a diverse melting pot of cultures where that familiarity breaks down walls of distrust, suspicion and even malice that exist in other parts of America. Unfortunately, the current political climate is still upside down.

It’s hard to turn on the TV or radio without some analysts, spokesperson, or a politician ranting about his or her opponent, using insulting words, combative language. It’s that type of petty partisan politics that plagues Washington, D.C., and I believe it’s a big reason why our country is stymied in returning to a strong economy and opportunities for all.

Governor Lingle wants to change that, and her years spent working across party aisles in Hawaii, working with people of all points of view with respect and civility, would be a tremendous asset to our country in this time of need for real leadership. We don’t want politicians in office who simply rubber stamp legislation because it’s what their party commands them to do. We want politicians who will do what they know is right, and we can always trust that Gov. Lingle will do what’s best for Hawaii’s people, regardless of any political party’s agenda. Linda Lingle will always put “people first.”

Have a great day off today, and until next time,

Major General Robert Lee
U.S. Army (Ret.)
Campaign Manager, Linda Lingle Senate Committee
