Hawaii has been ranked the worst U.S. state overall for poor driving behavior

Ahead of Labor Day, where many are gearing up for one last summer road trip, Forbes Advisor Car Insurance polled 5,000 U.S. drivers to reveal their worst driving behaviors. 

According to the survey, Hawaii has been ranked the worst U.S. state overall for poor driving behavior. Driving under the influence, speeding, texting and honking are amongst the worst habits. 

Despite 89% of drivers in Hawaii considering themselves to be a ‘good driver’, this is in fact the lowest percentage nationwide. 

The survey also uncovers surprising findings about Hawaii driving habits, just as the roads are about to get busier:

Hawaii leads the way as the state with the worst driving behavior, closely followed by Oregon and New Mexico. 

Hawaii’s worst driving habit is speeding (less than 10 mph over the limit), with nearly half (47%) of drivers doing so the past month. This is followed in second by eating whilst driving (32%), then speeding up to a yellow light (28%).

Hawaii shows up at the top of three bad-driving categories. It’s the worst state for:

• Changing lanes or turning without signaling (20%)
• Speeding 20 mph or more over the limit (13%)
• Running a red light (8%), tied with Texas and Oregon

Hawaii ranks within the top 10 states for several other dangerous driving behaviors, including:

• 2nd for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs (3%)
• 3rd for speeding 10-19 mph over the limit (21%)
• 4th for speeding up to catch a yellow light (28%)
• 4th for texting whilst driving (17%)
• 4th for honking at another driver (13%)
