2022’s Best & Worst States for Doctors

Doctors are one of the most essential professions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which the U.S. has been battling for over two years now. Doctors are on the front lines helping to combat the spread of this disease and are working to administer the vaccines and boosters that will eventually help life go back to normal. Containing coronavirus will not only help America’s health, but it will also be essential for the full healing of our economy.

Doctors are well compensated for the hard work they do to keep patients healthy. They are among the highest-paid and most educated professionals in the U.S., with general physicians having a median salary equal to or greater than $208,000 per year. The high salary makes sense, given the importance of their life-saving work and the struggles that come with life in the medical profession. However, doctors don’t start out wealthy. The average medical-school debt is around $216,000.

In order to help doctors decide where to practice, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 19 key metrics. Their data set ranges from the average annual wage of physicians to hospitals per capita to the quality of the public hospital system….
