Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: "We must lift the Jones Act, which has exploited Puerto Rican consumers and strangled the economy"

Jones Act reform gains another prominent ally

From Grassroot Institute, October 14, 2020

As noted in the Cato Institute's most recent Jones Act Gazette, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) used the recent three-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria's devastation of Puerto Rico to call for a lifting of the Jones Act.

“On the third anniversary of Hurricane Maria's landfall on Puerto Rico, we remember the nearly 3,000 Puerto Ricans that died in the aftermath, my grandfather among them," Cortez tweeted.

She proposed a grab bag of government programs to help Puerto Rico that the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii wouldn't necessarily agree with, but we do appreciate that she called out the Jones Act.

"We must lift the Jones Act, which has exploited Puerto Rican consumers and strangled the economy," Ocasio-Cortez said.

Said one of her Twitter followers: "When she's right, she's right." Said another: "Lady, we don’t see eye-to-eye on a lot, but if you’re in for abolishing the Jones Act, I’m 100% behind you." And another: "The Jones Act is a complete failure and certainly beats up on Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and U.S. territories the most of all."

U.S. Rep. Ed Case (D-HI), a sponsor in Congress of several Jones Act-reform bills, might want to give AOC a call, if he hasn't already.
