Hawaii State Legislators Opened on January 20, 2016

From Hawaii Family Forum January 22, 2016

The Hawaii State Legislature opened on Wednesday, January 20, 2016.  If you missed it and want to read the Senate Floor Speeches, you can do so at this link.   We are monitoring the issues and will sent out alerts and information on hearings as soon we get notice.

Freedom of Speech Bill Deferred by Senate Judiciary.

On January 21, 2016, the Hawaii Senate Judiciary accepted testimony on a bill (SB 217) that proposed a constitutional amendment to provide that the right to freedom of speech does not include the expenditure of money to influence elections. The intent of the bill was to apparently amend the Hawaiʻi Constitution to address one aspect of the United States Supreme Court’s controversial decision in Citizens United v. Fed. Election Comm’n, 558 U.S. 310 (2010). The Hawaii Attorney General testified that " ... the proposed constitutional amendment, if ratified, will have no practical legal effect. The State of Hawaiʻi remains subject to the Citizens United ruling construing the United States Constitution, regardless of any amendment made to the Hawaiʻi Constitution."  The bill was deferred.
