DJOU ON THAI MILITARY COUP: First Thai-American in Congress Reacts to the Military Seizing Power in Thailand

News Release from Djou Campaign May 22, 2014

Charles K. Djou’s campaign released a statement on today’s military coup in Thailand.  Djou is the first Thai-American to have been elected to Congress.

“I am deeply saddened by the military takeover of the Thai government today.  I join the Obama administration in urging Thailand’s armed forces to return power to democratic institutions,” stated Djou.  “The use of military force to resolve political differences is exceptionally disappointing.”

Djou’s mother was born and raised in Bangkok and Djou is the first Thai-American ever elected to Congress.  In May 2010, just as Djou was being sworn in as a newly-elected Congressman, the Thai military used violent force to disperse government protesters to resolve the last political crisis in Thailand.

Today Djou is campaigning for Congress as a centrist to fix the bitter partisan division in D.C. that is tearing apart our country.

Djou stated: “This coup serves as a timely reminder to all of us in America that we need to work together and find common ground.  The drastic reduction in moderates and centrists in Congress has resulted in bitter divisiveness in our government, as demonstrated by the government shutdown in October.”
