QUALITY EDUCATION THAT RESULTS IN IMPROVED STUDENT LEARNING

The Hawaii State Teachers Association urges the Legislature to support and fund the following:

• Fully funded, mandatory pre-kindergarten and kindergarten for all children in Hawaii;
• Professional teachers’ salaries that will help recruit and retain the best and brightest into Hawaii’s classrooms;
• Provide funding for appropriate student/teacher ratio in every public school in Hawaii;
• An elected Board of Education that answers to the public, not the governor and that meets its responsibility to educate all children in Hawaii; and
• Realistic bell schedules for all schools.

QUALITY TEACHING AND LEARNING CONDITIONS

The Hawaii State Teachers Association urges the Legislature to support and fund the following:

• Healthy environments and appropriate climate control in every classroom that enhances improved learning;
• Security plans in place in case of emergencies and/or school crises; and
• Increased student supervision by trained security staff.

GOVERNOR’S STATEMENT REGARDING HSTA SUPPORT OF EARLY EDUCATION

HONOLULU — Gov. Neil Abercrombie today welcomed the opportunity to work with the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) on developing a high-quality, state-funded early learning system to ensure Hawaii’s children are prepared to enter kindergarten ready to learn.

The Governor stated:

“I welcome HSTA’s support of publicly funded preschool.

“My Executive Office on Early Learning looks forward to working with HSTA and its members, the Hawaii Board of Education, and the Legislature in developing a comprehensive and integrated statewide early childhood education and development program.

“This is a fundamental investment in the future of Hawaii’s keiki and our entire state.”
