Key witness against Miske assaulted three times in retaliation while in federal custody
ILind: … Jacob “Jake” Smith, who was on the witness stand for six days during the racketeering trial of Michael J. Miske Jr. and whose testimony is considered to have been key to Miske’s conviction, has been the target of three assaults in the past four months in retaliation for the testimony against his former boss.
The assaults took place while Smith has been detained in the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu awaiting sentencing and were carried out by members of two violent local gangs that Miske is said to have influence over, Murder, Inc., and the WestSide Gang. One attack occurred in the presence of guards who witnessed the entire incident.
Smith’s attorney, Louis Michael Ching, who took over his case last November, disclosed the assaults in a motion filed in court last week seeking have Smith released from the detention center to house arrest in his parents home until his scheduled sentencing on October 10.
In his motion, Ching said the assaults show there is nowhere safe except the detention center’s special housing unit (SHU), where he said other inmates “would taunt and threaten Defendant Smith 24 hours each day as he sat in his cell….”
According to Ching’s court filings, Smith had been housed in Module 5a at the FDC, while Miske has been housed in Module 4b along with others, including Bronson Gouveia, a career criminal with convictions going back to 1997. Gouveia’s reported street name, “Murder Inc.,” is now the name attached to a gang he allegedly controls. Gouveia is in the detention center awaiting trial on federal drug trafficking and firearms charges….
“This last incident shows that the Gang members of WestSide and Murder, Inc. has a far reaching arm into the federal prison system,” Ching states in an addendum to his motion. “They are not limited to just their gangs, but can employ the cooperation of any other existing violent gang under the BOP.”

HNN: … U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leaders say they have removed debris from 1,372 out of 1,399 residential properties and 69 out of 159 commercial properties in Lahaina.
They said they expected to complete debris removal from residential lots by January, but say they are ahead of schedule and could be done as early as next month.
On Komo Mai Street, the Alexander ohana hope to have their home rebuilt by the end of the year.
“It gives us hope that everyone can do it. People across the street are now building, and up the street, there are foundations being poured. So, I think it gives hope to people in Lahaina,” Kari Alexander said.
“She’s fortunate, the infrastructure here wasn’t really damaged at all. So, she’s able to connect quickly. There’s other places that you’re going to notice within, we call it the black box, but within that Kahoma Stream to Shaw Street below the highway, that area … there’s a lot of damage that we need to fix,” said Eric Nakagawa, Department of Environmental Management Wastewater Division Chief.
(NOTE: This 'Black Box' runs North from Shaw Street site of the proposed Venice of the Pacific Tourist Water Feature up to Mala Wharf. This is a sign that this area will be targetted for total redesign.)
“This is one small bite out of a very large problem. But 169 units is 169 units closer to getting families back into this community,” said Swenson.
There, the County Water Supply Deputy Director made a major announcement regarding water in Lahaina
“As of today, we will be amending the rest of Lahaina … all of Lahaina will be lifted,” said Kimo Landgraf. “There will no longer be an unsafe water advisory. All the water will be back to drinking water standards.”
Adjacent to Kilohana is Ka Lai Ola, 450 temporary housing units that will house up to 1,500 fire survivors for up to five years….
