Only 38 Hurricane ‘Shelters’ on Oahu -- officials ‘solve’ problem by using different word

KHON: … emergency officials say most Hawaii buildings do not meet hurricane shelter criteria….

Kauai and Honolulu have sought alternatives known as hurricane refuge areas which are mostly in state Department of Education school buildings, like gyms or cafeterias.

“So, while these buildings do not meet the criteria and definition of a hurricane shelter, they do serve as better alternative and they are the best we have in our building inventory to make available to the public,” Toiya explained.

In 2020 and 2021, Honolulu Emergency Management hired professionals to look at over 120 buildings deemed hurricane safe, but only 38 were considered safe enough.

“These are meant to be shelters of last resort, they do not fit the formal criteria of a hurricane shelter but it will offer protection from the element, they are out of flood zones,” Toiya added….

(They changed the name to ‘refuge’.  Feel safer now?)

ER psychiatrist sees more youth coming in with marijuana psychosis

KITV: … Dr. Gerald Busch worked with psychiatric patients at a Honolulu hospital where he says over the last four years he has seen a gradual increase in cannabis-induced psychotic disorders coming to the emergency room. …

Busch cites a University of Toronto study published last week. "There was a 27-fold increase in psychotic disorders in teenagers who were smoking cannabis."

Busch says it's because the product is stronger today than in decades past. "The marijuana that's available has a much higher purity and much higher concentration."

Some psychotic episodes leave permanent damage. "It can trigger the development of a more serious mental illness. If there's a family history of schizophrenia or psychosis, there's a higher likelihood the teen might have a psychotic episode that lasts. Most of the time it's treated with anti-psychotic medicines in the emergency room, and the person does get better," Busch describes…..

Law Enforcement Department halts evictions in wake of violent standoff

HNN: … The state Department of Law Enforcement has stopped all eviction actions statewide to review policies after a 20-hour standoff in Waianae last month.

The moratorium is causing some “mom-and-pop” homeowners to fall behind on their mortgages as they wait out uncooperative tenants, according to their attorneys.

“The only way they can get somebody out of their property for breaking the lease, not paying the rent, doing illegal activities, is the sheriffs,” attorney Victor Bakke said….

Water at Honolulu federal building, courthouse deemed unsafe for drinking, hygiene

HNN: … The water in Honolulu’s federal building and the courthouse has been deemed unsafe to drink or use for hygiene following positive results for legionella bacteria.

Water sources in the child care center and health unit were free of the bacteria.

Officials said they’re working to correct the issue and conduct additional testing.

According to the Mayo Clinic, legionella can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia that can be fatal if left untreated….
