...in a hearing on the State’s motion for summary judgment, the Native Hawaiian Legal Corp. argued that the court should interpret “preserve in place” as used in the State burial law and administrative rules as prohibiting building over burials. Rep Karl Rhoads, Oahu Co Democrats try to knock Iraq War Vet off HD 28 ballot
By News Release @ 7:20 PM :: 11491 Views :: Honolulu County, Democratic Party, Office of Elections, Republican Party

“People of House District 28th should know who the ‘residents’ filing these petty complaints are. Lynne Matusow is an Oahu County Democratic Party official who has developed a habit of filing complaints against Mr. Chang to distract the campaign away from Karl Rhoads’ record of raising taxes and hurting small business. Anthony Chang is a former staffer at the Democratic Party who was paid to do one of the dirtiest jobs in politics-- follow opposing candidates around with a video camera. These people are not concerned residents and this is not an honest complaint.

AtomicMonkey responds: “Some of us work for the City…we proudly stand by description of Abercrombie as ‘flailing gasbag’”
By Letters to the Editor @ 11:22 AM :: 14671 Views :: Honolulu County, Ethics, Rail

Bob Wiesel is a pseudonym that has a long history in Honolulu and been passed around quite a bit. I am one of many Bob Wiesels...collectively we amount to a poor man's Publius. There are blog entries that go back to before 2001 still online from Robert D. Wiesel, BobW, BWiesel and every other variant that you can dream up. Some of the "Bob's" work for, or had worked for both the city and state at some point.
Blog participation at City Hall tapered off after Dave Shapiro started publishing IP addresses in an attempt to suppress his critics. Several individuals at City Hall asked Charles Totto (ethics commission) for a reading on whether it was "against the rules" to participate during our lunch hour, breaks etc. He recommended that we play it safe and just not do it at all from the city network and it pretty much stopped at that point. Bob Wiesels live on, however, on their own time and own internet connections.

Bought and paid for, will Hirono cast the deciding vote for Obamacare?
By Andrew Walden @ 1:40 PM :: 23435 Views :: Hawaii County , Akaka Bill, Honolulu County, Democratic Party, Kauai County, DHHL, Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics
|
For months, Mazie Hirono pledged to vote against the Senate version of Obamacare. For her, Senate Obamacare just wasn’t socialist enough. Along with 56 other “progressive” members of Congress, she demanded a program with a public option and denounced the Senate bill as a multi-billion dollar giveaway to the insurance companies.
Hirono’s July 30, 2009 letter explained:
“Any bill that does not provide, at a minimum, for a public option with reimbursement rates based on Medicare rates--not negotiated rates—is unacceptable…. (T)his agreement will result in the public, both as insurance purchasers and as taxpayers, paying ever higher rates to insurance companies. We simply cannot vote for such a proposal.”
Hirono has maintained this position as recently as February 2, but at the last minute, barely noticed by her “progressive” base, Rep Mazie Hirono has changed her mind....

Now, more than ever, we need to bring balance to our nation’s capitol. For too long, Hawaii residents have been underserved with only “one” viewpoint represented in Congress. This out-of-balance system has failed our citizens and allowed for policies that have stifled our creativity and economic growth and burdened us with heavy taxes, wasteful, out of control government spending, and inefficient bureaucratic growth.
The people are speaking, but Washington isn’t listening. That’s why we need new leaders who will listen and provide “common sense” approaches to get our country back on track. Join me in the “good fight” and allow me the honor to represent you with “a strong voice and presence” in the halls of Congress.

Kawamura on budget: Hooser "out of touch with reality"
By News Release @ 12:54 PM :: 12840 Views :: Honolulu County, Democratic Party, Energy, Environment
|
Hooser prefers that we hold hearings and community discussions to debate the type and size of government we should have. Lawmakers can hold such hearings during the next legislative session, or even schedule them now while the Legislature is on its break. Frankly, the Legislature should have held such discussions three or four years ago, when the State had money to invest in our long-term future.
While Hooser is busy debating options, the Administration is facing up to our fiscal responsibility and obligation to the people of Hawai‘i by taking immediate steps to address the current financial crisis. Many of the decisions that are being made are not ones that we want to make, but we are doing what needs to done in order to ensure the State government does not run out of money, which will happen if we wait as Hooser suggests.

Defeating the "homelessness industry" before it gets a grip on Hawaii
By Andrew Walden @ 12:17 PM :: 22639 Views :: Honolulu County, Homelessness, Tourism
|
The ACLU is threatening a lawsuit against the City of Honolulu after the City Council voted to ban sleeping on sidewalks. Today's Star-Bulletin editorializes:
Councilman Charles Djou introduced the bill because of concerns about how the homeless sleeping on Waikiki sidewalks is affecting tourism. Djou maintains that refusing to allow the chronically homeless to sleep on sidewalks would "put the hammer on people getting the help they need."
Djou needs to cite a precedent where such tough compassion has actually worked.
The answer is embarrassingly simple: Los Angeles.
This leads to an obvious question the Star-Bulletin editorialists must answer:
Where has your laissez-faire attitude towards homelessness ever produced anything but more homelessness?

MRC Greenwood and "A Powerful Coterie of larcenous. . . ." (UH's next system President?)
By Andrew Walden @ 8:57 PM :: 35284 Views :: Hawaii County , Honolulu County, DHHL, Maui County, Energy, Environment
|
When the Star-Bulletin and Advertiser write about "ethical lapses" of public officials without actually describing the lapses it is a sure sign that a good story is lurking below the surface. Of course that is the case with MRC Greenwood, one of the two finalists selected from 600 applicants for the job of UH system President.
This hidden story involves money-grubbing lesbians, a $30,000 dog run paid for by the UC system, former Communist Party vice-presidential candidate Angela Davis, and one suicide. Questions Hawaii reporters should be asking Greenwood include: "If hired, will UH be expected to also hire Ms Goff and/or your son?" and "Will you speak up in favor of administrators arranging cushy high-paying jobs for their lovers at UH--or was that just a UC thing?"
