Hawai`i County voters are being asked to approve a change to county ordinance making cannabis enforcement the lowest law enforcement priority. This is falsely portrayed as a move to legalize marijuana. It is not.

HONOLULU – GOVERNING magazine announced today that Hawai‘i Human Services Director Lillian Koller has been selected as a “Public Official of the Year” for her leadership in bringing about widespread improvements at the State Department of Human Services (DHS) over the past five years, including an overhaul of the child welfare system.

Some may have thought this problem was settled when activists were given plum jobs at Hilo’s shiny new Imiloa Astronomy center, but shakedown is the foundation of Hawai`i’s so-called economy and when Dan Inouye plops a $1.2 billion money bag on the top of Mauna Kea, the grasping begins.

William S. Richardson School of Law professor of law emeritus and former dean Richard S. Miller claims the HSTA drug testing agreement is a “violation of basic rights”. His claims, published in the Honolulu Advertiser September 12 are wrong for several reasons.

The State is asking the High Court to overturn the Hawai`i State Supreme Court’s January, 2008 decision holding that the United States Congress in the 1993 “Apology Resolution” had forbidden the State from selling or exchanging any of the State’s approximately 1.2 million acres of so-called “Ceded Lands”, unless and until a political settlement was reached with Native Hawaiians. The State argued to the High Court that the United States Congress had done no such thing and that Congress has no power to try to control the sale of lands belonging to a sovereign state.

Obama’s choice of representation is yet another sign that free speech would be at risk of being strangled by political correctness and lawsuits under an Obama Presidency.

As Big Island residents and businesses try to make sense of the economic news dominating the local, national and global media, it is critical to keep an objective perspective on what we need to do as a state to overcome current economic challenges.
