The deadline for public comment on the Honolulu Rail's Archaeological Inventory Survey is May 30. Under the Supreme Court ruling requiring one complete AIS for the entire rail system, the public comment period was extended, but SHPD and HART have made only the most minimal public mention of the new deadline.
SHPD April 22 posted an announcement of the AIS comment period on their website. The purpose of an AIS is, "identification and protection of archaeological sites and burials." This includes Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian burial sites, historic buildings, and culturally or historically significant sites which may be impacted by Honolulu Rail construction.
The AIS deadline comes just as the Federal NPS comes to Hawaii for a long-awaited accreditation inspection. The review could determine the future of SHPD's federal accreditation and supply of federal money.
