First, Third Circuit Judges Petition for Retention

NOTICE OF PETITION FOR RETENTION

News Release from Hawaii JSC November 30, 2012

In accordance with Section 4, Article VI of the Constitution of the State of Hawaiʻi, the Judicial Selection Commission announces that the following judges petitioned the Commission to be retained in office:

  • Honorable Harry P. Freitas as District Court Judge, Third Circuit-term expires on May 31, 2013
  • Honorable Lloyd X. Van De Car as District Family Court Judge, Third Circuit-term expires on May 31, 2013
  • Honorable Rhonda A. Nishimura as Circuit Court Judge, First Circuit-term expires on June 19, 2013

The Constitution of the State of Hawaiʻi empowers the Commission to determine whether Judge Freitas and Judge Van De Car should be retained in office for an additional term of six years and Judge Nishimura for an additional term of ten years.

The Commission invites interested persons to submit written comments or fill out an evaluation form on whether Judge Freitas, Judge Van De Car and Judge Nishimura should be retained in office for a new term. All written comments and evaluation forms will be kept CONFIDENTIAL.

Please visit the Commission’s website and fill out form JS-P-081, the Judicial Evaluation Retention Form. Written comments and/or form JS-P-081 must be postmarked or faxed by Thursday, February 28, 2013 to:
