DoE Releases School by School Enrollment Figures

Official 2012-13 Public and Charter School Enrollment

Enrollment in DOE schools rises by some 1,500 students

The state's official public school enrollment for the 2012-13 school year -- with all 254 Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) schools and 32 charter schools -- is
183,251, an increase of 1.1 percent compared to last year’s total of 181,213.

The DOE public schools enroll 173,658 (+1,554 from last year) students, about 95 percent of the total, while charter schools have 9,593 (+484), or 5 percent of the total.

The enrollment increase this school year can still be attributed to the large number of births in 2007, as well as the overall state of the economy.

Public Schools

Enrollment in DOE schools has increased by about 1 percent compared to last year’s count of 172,104.

The official DOE enrollment for the 2012-13 school year is 173,658 at 254 schools, including 156,614 (+1,544) in regular education and 17,044 (+10) in special education.

On Oahu, Leeward remained the largest administrative district with 40,286 students, followed by Central with 33,318, Honolulu with 31,289, and Windward with 15,036. On the Neighbor Islands, Hawaii has 23,180 students, Maui has 21,119, and Kauai has 9,430.

In 2012-13, the five largest public schools by grade level are:

· High Schools (all grades 9-12) – Campbell (2,821), Waipahu (2,450), Mililani (2,445), Farrington (2,437), and Kapolei (2,045).

· Intermediate/Middle Schools – Mililani Middle (1,699, grades 6-8), Kapolei Middle (1,466, 6-8), Waipahu Intermediate (1,289, 7-8), Maui Waena Intermediate (1,112, 6-8), and Kalakaua Middle (1,032, 6-8),

· Elementary Schools – August Ahrens (1,427, grades K-6), Holomua (1,383, K-6), Kapolei (1,136, K-5) Ewa (1,109, K-6), and Waipahu (1,093, K-6),

The five smallest public schools in the state include: Niihau (14, K-12), Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (56, K-12), Waiahole (74, K-6), Kilohana (75, K-6), and Maunaloa (87, K-6).

Charter Schools

Charter schools realized a 5.3 percent gain in enrollment to 9,593, over last year’s 9,109.

The five largest charter schools are: Kamaile Academy (931, K-11), Hawaii Technology Academy (907, K-12), Ka Waihona o ka Naauao (610, K-8), Hawaii Academy of Arts & Sciences (545, K-12), and Kihei (503, K-12).

The five smallest charter schools are: Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha (39, K-12), Ke Ana Laahana (55, 7-12), Kula Aupuni Niihau a Kahelelani Aloha (62, K-12), Hakipuu Learning Center (73, 4-12), and Halau Ku Mana (98, 6-12).
