Governor Releases $17.9 Million for CIPs on Maui

KAHULUI – Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $17.9 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) on the Valley Isle, including more than $8.1 million for renovation, upgrade and expansion projects at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

“As elements of the federal Affordable Care Act are implemented, it is important that we continue to invest in healthcare infrastructure throughout our state to ensure that facilities are ready to provide access to quality healthcare for all the people of Hawai
i, said Governor Abercrombie. Since I took office in 2011, my administration has released more than $83.8 million exclusively for CIPs on Maui, including these newly released funds. These projects are creating job opportunities now and will benefit the community for years to come.”

Allotment of funds for the following priority projects, identified by members of the state Legislature, has been approved by the Governor:

Maui Memorial Medical Center

$3,500,000 - Design, construction, equipment and required works of art as part of an elevator replacement project to comply with current National Fire Protection Association and life safety and building codes
$1,800,000 - Construction, equipment and required works of art as part of renovations to the current laboratory, pharmacy and imaging departments, which have outgrown the space in their respective areas; as such, the medical center is planning to renovate the old courtyard area to accommodate the expansion
$900,000 - Construction, equipment and required works of art as part of a plumbing renovation project, consisting of replacing piping, insulation, bathroom fixtures and valves, and repairs to walls, floor drain lines and piping supports.
$800,000 - Construction, equipment and required works of art in the replacement of the air conditioning system, focusing on the IT server room, patient treatment areas, and the laundry department
$700,000 - Replacement of approximately 50 patient beds, which are 16-20 years old (typical life of patient beds is 10-12 years)
$475,000 - Design, construction, equipment and required works of art to replace the laundry equipment (existing washer and dryer are more than 14 years old), as well as electrical and plumbing upgrades to accommodate the new equipment

Transportation
$2,000,000 – Honoapiilani Highway, Maui - Additional construction needed in the restoration and implementation of environmental controls for runoff on roadway and shoulders in the vicinity of Launiupoko along Honoapiilani Highway, damaged by repeated high surf and wave action (additional construction funds required to address the emergency project)
$1,200,000 - Hana Highway, Maui – Construction to improved runoff and provide increased drainage capacity on roadway and shoulder-cross-slopes in the vicinity of Hoolawa Bridge

Other
$4,501,000 – University of Hawaii Maui College - Renovation of the existing Science Building to house the Allied Health programs that currently rent off-campus spaces (Allied Health programs include community health, nursing, dental hygiene, and oral health); as well as upgrades to air conditioning and electrical systems, vents and roofing
$1,800,000 - David Malo Circle, Maui - Design and construction for exterior improvements and site work, including reroofing buildings, installing new exterior siding, painting, parking lot repaving, and sidewalks renovation
$285,000 - Wailuku Public Library, Maui - Additional construction necessary for replacement of the existing clay roofing tile with new clay roofing tile, repairs to the underlying roofing substrate, and repairs to and replacement of the existing flat roof system
