Local and National Companies Assemble To Honor America's Greatest Living Heroes

News Release Monday Aug 13, 2012

Local businesses and national companies alike are lining up to be part of history, as Honolulu hosts 55 of America's 81 living Medal of Honor recipients this fall at the 2012 Medal of Honor Society Convention. Recipients from World War II up to the current conflict in Afghanistan will be in attendance.

The Medal of Honor Society gathers each year to reunite living members, as they continue their legacy of inspiring our youth, honoring patriots and memorializing those recipients who have passed. Honolulu was selected to host the 2012 Medal of Honor Society Convention, which will be Oct. 1-6.

"We are truly humbled and proud to share the 'Ohana culture, traditions and splendor that is distinctly Hawaii with our nation's most revered heroes," said retired U.S. Navy Admiral and former Pacific Command Commander Thomas Fargo, co-chairman of the convention's host committee. "We are profoundly grateful to our supporters who are making it possible to create a once-in-a-lifetime tribute befitting these great men and their families."

The convention will be funded entirely by contributions, with more than a dozen corporate sponsors already committed to be part of the convention, and will feature public and private events and activities in and around Honolulu, including community outreach to students and veterans.

"As a company with a mission to serve those who serve, there is no event more deserving of our support than the Medal of Honor Convention," said David J. McIntyre, Jr., President and CEO of TriWest Healthcare Alliance, one of the convention's presenting sponsors. McIntyre also serves as co-chairman of the convention's host committee. "These are humble men of incredible character. They embody the true meaning of heroism, and reinforce the values of courage, sacrifice and freedom."

Fargo and McIntyre said they are grateful to the individuals and companies who have stepped forward thus far to help fund the convention. To date, the local co-lead sponsors are HECO and First Hawaiian Bank. Additional corporate sponsors include: TriWest Healthcare Alliance, Lockheed Martin, Huntington Ingalls Industries, Hawaiian Airlines, Panda Travel, Mary Charles & Associates, Communications Pacific, Hawaii News Now, Hilo Hattie, J.J. Dolan's, Maui Jim, Tommy Bahama, Murphy's Bar & Grill, Honolulu Star-Advertiser and the USO.

About the 2012 Medal of Honor Convention

The Medal of Honor Society gathers each year to reunite living members as they continue their legacy of inspiring our youth, honoring patriots and exemplary citizens, and memorializing those recipients who have passed. Honolulu is the proud host for the 2012 Convention. The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor that can be bestowed upon a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over the past 151 years, fewer than 3,500 recipients have been awarded the Medal. Only 81 living recipients remain today, including two from Hawaii.
