Let your auto insurer spy on you and save money
News Release from DCCA Insurance Division
The state Insurance Division has approved a new type of personal auto program geared toward saving Hawaii’s safe drivers on their auto insurance.
DTRIC Insurance Underwriters, Ltd., is the first insurer in Hawaii approved to sell a user-based discount program that uses voluntarily installed devices to identify safe drivers for rewards.
Under the program, DTRIC evaluates how a customer drives based on data accumulated by an Akamai Rater device installed in the vehicle.
The policyholder who chooses to enroll in the plan installs the device in his or her vehicle.
“Unsafe driving behavior can put as big a dent in your wallet as well as your fender; now these device-related programs create more incentive to drive safely and help save money for consumers who do so,” Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito said. “This type of program is a growing trend on the mainland, and we anticipate that other insurers will create similar programs here in Hawai’i in the near future. We expect to approve more insurance products with similar devices soon.”
The Hawaii Insurance Division oversees the state’s insurance industry, issues licenses, examines the fiscal condition of Hawaii-based companies, reviews rate and policy filings, and investigates insurance related complaints.
