‘Schools progress heartening’
A few months ago, we reported on the HDOE's desperate attempts to show progress on structural reforms that would allow them to keep the $75 million dollar grant the state received from the Federal "Race to the Top" Program.
It appears that those efforts have been successful.
US Education Secretary Arnie Duncan characterized the current progress of reforms in the Hawaii educational system as "encouraging" and as boding well for future reform efforts.
With test scores in both math and reading increasing on the last Hawaii State Assessment, the Star Advertiser editorial board is calling for the HDOE to stay committed to the more rigorous standards planned due to the RTTT grant.
Committing to reforms that help keep teachers and bureaucrats accountable would truly be a key step for Hawaii's beleaguered educational system.
