Mike Breslin Announces Candidacy for House District 6
News Release from www.BreslinForHawaii.com
Former educator, commercial fisherman, island musician with the Windward Symphony (Oahu), and Waianae Neighborhood Board Representative, Mike Breslin officially enters the race for Hawai’i House District 6. Mike, a graduate of University of South Florida and Virginia Tech, attended UH Manoa graduate school in oceanography, where he also taught chemistry labs and worked in the Physics Department. Having studied at Hawai’i Maritime Academy and earned a US Coast Guard Operator’s License, he operated a multi-purpose vessel from Waianae Harbor in the 1970’s and 80’s when he lived at the Makaha Surfside Apartments in Waianae. He also taught math and marine sciences at Waianae High School, and because of his connections at UH oceanography department, Mike arranged once for a UH research vessel to host his Waianae H.S. marine science students, meeting the class at Waianae Harbor for boarding. Our students had an experience of a lifetime as UH Oceanography staff conducted general science and oceanography-related demonstrations for them, a few miles off Waianae Coast.
In 2006, Mike came to Kona and has resided in House District 6 since. He was math and science teacher, and then became Principal at High School of the Pacific, a charitable, college-preparatory high school for students from throughout Oceania. HSP closed in July 2009 due to funding cuts.
When asked why he entered the House District 6 race, Mike says, “Simply because people asked to do so. Throughout my adult life, I have cultivated a sense of public service, and those who perceive that quality in me have said that I can make a positive difference in our Hawai’i House.”
You may see Mike here and there about Kona, and at special events. He especially frequents various parts of Kailua Town and La’aloa “Magic Sands” Beach Park.
