Come Clean Colleen: Hawaii Republican Party Calls for Investigation of Hanabusa's Purported Loans

News Release from Hawaii Republican Party

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Republican Party reacted to a new report that Hawaii Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa may have inappropriately used campaign funds to benefit herself personally.

The Hawaii Republican Party stated, "Hawaii deserves representatives who are honest and ethical. A new revelation that Rep. Colleen Hanabusa may have inappropriately pocketed campaign funds is disturbing. We urge Rep. Hanabusa to come clean and open her bank loan repayment records, and prove to Hawaii residents that she did not misuse campaign funds. Hawaii residents deserve to know whether Hanabusa really paid Central Pacific Bank 9% interest over the last six years despite loan documentation indicating that the bank interest rate would have been half that amount. If Hanabusa refuses to come clean, the HRP urges the appropriate law enforcement agencies and the House Ethics Committee to investigate Rep. Hanabusa for criminal and/or ethical misconduct."

In March of this year, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, an independent non-partisan organization, slammed Hanabusa for using her campaign loans to benefit herself personally. Based on a search of Hanabusa's FEC records, a new report shows that Hanabusa may have intentionally misstated her campaign loan interest rate to pad her own bank account. Further investigation is needed to determine if Hanabusa's actions are criminal, unethical, or merely incompetence by the congresswoman.
