ALOHA O'E REPRESENTATIVE BARBARA MARUMOTO

News Release from Hawaii Republican Party May 22, 2012

HONOLULU - State Representative Barbara Marumoto (R, Kahala-Kaimuki) has announced that she will be retiring from serving in elected office. Rep. Marumoto is one of the most senior and respected members of the House, having served as a State Representative for her community since 1978. During her time in office, Rep. Marumoto served on many critical legislative committees, including Ways & Means, The Judiciary, and Consumer Protection and Commerce. Most recently, Rep. Marumoto was an outspoken opponent of Governor Abercrombie's proposal to tax retirees’ pensions. Rep. Marumoto has been awarded many honors and accolades and was named ”Legislator of the Year” in 1992 by the National Republican Legislators Association and in 2009 by the Hawaii Medical Association.

"Rep. Marumoto will be missed. Her steady presence and leadership at the Capitol as well as her dedication to her community and the State of Hawaii has been truly exemplary. Representative Marumoto’s contribution to the well-being of our beloved State has been outstanding and she is a role model for all public officeholders and for our future candidates." said HRP Chair David Chang.

Rep. Marumoto released the following statement: "It has been an honor to serve in the House of Representatives and a privilege to serve the good people of the State of Hawaii. I will be at my desk until the general election and continue to work in the community thereafter."

Chair David Chang added: “Representative Marumoto has paved the way for the next generation of Republican leaders. We look forward to her continued wisdom and counsel to be provided to those of us of the younger generation stepping up to continue her legacy.”

HOUSE REPUBLICANS RELEASE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS REGARDING REP. BARBARA MARUMOTO'S DECISION TO NOT SEEK REELECTION

News Release from House Republican Caucus May 22, 2012

“I honor Rep. Marumoto’s decision to say “time-out for 2012,” but the people of her district, the State of Hawaii and the Republican Caucus are losing a great leader and stateswoman," said Minority Leader Gene Ward. "She will always be remembered as the one who killed Governor Abercrombie’s proposal to tax pensions. Barbara is a lot like Fred Hemmings and Frank Fasi in that she will never stop working for the people of Hawaii.”

"I have served beside Barb in the State House for over 20 years and will always appreciate her strong resolve, her policy expertise and most of all, her friendship. She has been a brilliant leader for the people of Hawaii," said Rep. Cynthia Thielen.

Rep. Corinne Ching added, "Barbara has been a champion for taxpayers and small businesses in our state. She has fought diligently for common sense safety issues and has made education a high priority. We will miss her greatly at the Legislature but I hope she knows she has made a lasting imprint on both the State House and her community."

"On behalf of the freshman legislators in our caucus, I thank Representative Marumoto for her tenacity and fortitude to do the right thing for our State in her decades of service," said Rep. Aaron Ling Johanson. "She will be missed in the State House, but she is leaving a remarkable legacy for the next generation of Republicans to carry on."
