Governor Abercrombie Releases $34.2 Million for Education, Health Services and Communications Projects

HONOLULU – Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $34.2 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) investing in educational, health services and communications facilities statewide.
“These projects continue to fulfill our commitment to a new day for the people of Hawai'i and stimulate the economy,” said Governor Abercrombie. “These funds in particular will help hospitals and health centers provide services and benefit Hawai'i’s students by maintaining and further upgrading our school facilities.”
The following projects were identified by members of the Legislature. The appropriated funds were approved by the Governor.
Education
- $9,320,000 – Waipahu Elementary School, O'ahu – Design, construction and works of art for a new eight-classroom building, which will include a special education classroom, six general education classrooms and a computer resource classroom
- $8,000,000 – Various schools, statewide – Design, construction and/or relocation of temporary facility buildings for schools, including Helemano, Koloa, Princess Nahienaena, Salt Lake, and Wheeler Elementary Schools; Hilo Intermediate School; and Nanakuli Intermediate and High School
- $2,750,000 – Kualapu'u Elementary School, Moloka'i – Construction of a new water line
- $2,200,000 – King Kekaulike High School, Maui – Completion of previously initiated design work and an environmental assessment
- $1,800,000 – Various high schools, statewide – Science facility upgrades
- $1,400,000 – Enchanted Lake Elementary School, O'ahu – Design, construction and works of art for electrical upgrades to support the use of technology
- $1,400,000 – Kailua Elementary School, O'ahu – Design, construction and works of art for electrical upgrades to support the use of technology
- $1,157,000 – Leeward Community College, O'ahu – Equipment for a new three-story education and innovation instructional facility
Health / Health Services
- $5,000,000 – Kona Community Hospital, Hawai'i Island – Planning, design, construction, equipment and works of art for a repair and upgrade project for emergency disaster infrastructure at the hospital, including replacement of elevator; water sprinkler system and chiller systems; reroofing to repair leaks above the emergency and operating rooms; and upgrades within the emergency room
- $500,000 – Palolo Chinese Home, O'ahu – Renovation of the dining hall and the care home building
- $309,547 – Maluhia Hospital, O'ahu – Construction and works of art as part of reroofing project
- $207,377 – Leahi Hospital, O'ahu – Repairs and repainting to hospital exterior
- $70,000 – Maluhia Hospital, O'ahu – Replacement of heat pump
- $20,200 – Leahi Hospital, O'ahu – Installation of new automatic doors
- $28,198 – Samuel Mahelona Hospital, Hawai'i Island –X-ray room renovation project
- $12,120 – Maluhia Hospital, O'ahu – Installation of new automatic doors
Communications
$113,000 – Waiakea Radio Facility, Anuenue Radio Sites and Towers, Hawai'i Island – Engineering services that will enhance the Hawai'i-Wide Area Integrated Information Access Network's critical communication infrastructure |
