The state's official public school enrollment for the 2011-12 school year-- with all 255 Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) schools and 31 charter schools -- is 181,213, an increase of 1.7 percent compared to last year’s total of 178,189.
The DOE public schools enroll 172,104 (+2,117 from last year) students, about 95 percent of the total; while charter schools have 9,109 (+907), or 5 percent of the total.
The substantial enrollment increase for this school year may be attributed to the large number of births in 2006. The birth increase correlates to the school year 2011-12 kindergarten enrollment which resulted in approximately 1000 more students as compared to previous years.
