CALL FOR APPLICATIONS AND NOMINATIONS TO SERVE ON THE STATE PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL COMMISSION

News Release from Hawaii BoE, March, 2026

The Board of Education (Board) is seeking qualified candidates to serve as members on the State Public Charter School Commission (Commission). The Commission is a statewide charter school authorizer whose mission is to authorize high-quality charter schools throughout Hawaiʻi, pursuant to chapter 302D, Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS).

There are three seats that are up for appointment.

Interested persons should complete and submit this application form with the appropriate attached documents. Organizations or individuals may also use the application form to nominate individuals and submit applications on their behalf, provided the individual certifies that they authorized the submission. The application, a letter of interest or nomination letter, and a resume must be submitted in a single email to boe.hawaii@boe.hawaii.gov on or before March 26, 2026.

Please note that to be eligible to serve, a candidate must not have been affiliated with any public charter school within one year preceding appointment to the Commission – as a current or previous employee, governing board member, vendor, contractor, agent, or representative – and cannot simultaneously serve as such, pursuant to section 302D-8, HRS.

At the Board’s May 14, 2026, general business meeting, a nomination committee will publicly present the names of the final nominees for appointment consideration. At its June 18, 2026, meeting, the Board will consider the nominations and make its appointment decisions. Candidates should plan to begin serving on the Commission as of July 1, 2026, if appointed.

Please contact the Board Office at boe.hawaii@boe.hawaii.gov or (808) 586-3334 with any questions.
