Republican lawmakers mainland trip over Kamehameha Schools’ admissions policy

HNN Sept 10, 2025

… State Sen. Brenton Awa and Rep. Diamond Garcia traveled to Virginia to try to convince conservative activist Edward Blum not to challenge Kamehameha Schools’ admissions policy ….

Encouraged by several Kamehameha alumni to initiate a conversation with Blum, Awa said he reached out to him in an effort to prevent legal action.

Awa added Blum was initially responsive, but went cold, so he and Garcia decided to find him in person….

The Instagram video shows the two outside of the organization’s address on Wilson Boulevard in Arlington listed on its website, which turned out to be a UPS mailbox.

“Stopped at the office, only to learn the office is only a mailbox so we had to go down the street, try get in touch with his attorneys. We made contact there and they’re supposed to call us back,” Awa shared in the video….

Republican state Rep. Kanani Souza condemned the trip, adding, “As far as the backlash on social media, it’s rightfully so. These two individuals, these two legislators, by their own admission, went to Virginia to visit the UPS store mailbox, and at the end of the day, we already had one mailbox conspiracy, we don’t need another mailbox conspiracy here in Hawaii.” ....
