News Release from U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii: As the nation celebrates its 235th birthday July 4, U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii invites the public to its 40th Annual Fourth of July Spectacular on Weyand and Sills Fields, here. Admission is free and open to the general public.

The daylong event begins at 9 a.m. with a 5K run, followed by a 1-mile keiki run. Weyand Field will be in full holiday mode by 10 a.m. with food, pony rides, game booths, midway rides, music, entertainment and demonstrations underway. The evening's entertainment at the main stage includes local musical headliners Natural Vibrations and a new car giveaway. "We invite the local community to join us, and we are pleased to continue the tradition, now in its 40th year, of hosting this special day of holiday entertainment and fun," said Col. Douglas S. Mulbury, commander, U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii.

The annual fireworks show begins promptly at 8:30 p.m. It will be preceded by members of the 25th Infantry Division Band, joined by the Harrison, Indiana High School Band, for the playing of the "1812 Overture," featuring live cannon fire, followed by the patriotic "Flags We Have Followed" presentation and concert.

"Our nation's birthday has particular significance, especially now, as we welcome back so many of our Soldiers from deployment in Iraq," Mulbury said. "Just as importantly, we also remember our many Soldiers, including the thousands of men and women currently serving the cause of freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan."

For those wanting to avoid traffic congestion following the fireworks display, guests are invited to stay and enjoy the after party. All four Schofield gates will remain open to the public until midnight.

To enter Schofield Barracks, vehicle drivers and all passengers 16 years of age and older are required to show a valid State or Federal ID at the gates.
