Tax Day is next week, and many six figure earners are finding out exactly how much they owe Uncle Sam.
In fact, new data shows you need to make a minimum of $130,000 to actually take home $100,000 in all 50 states -- after factoring in federal, state and FICA and Social Security taxes.
- The five states where you need the most to net $100,000 are Oregon, Maryland, Hawaii, California and Minnesota. The salary needed ranges from $143,539 in Minnesota to $148,309 in Oregon.
- Nine states do not tax income and thus tied for the least amount needed to net $100,000: $130,999. Those states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
- Four states have income tax below 3% and came in just above the states with no income tax: Louisiana, Ohio, Arizona, North Dakota.
Findings For Hawaii
To find out the salary needed to actually take home $100K in Hawaii, researchers at GOBankingRates analyzed income taxes at both the federal and state level (including FICA). Our researchers used an in-house calculator for a person filing their taxes as a single person and using the standard deduction (with 2024 tax brackets).
Our findings show you need a gross salary of roughly $145,000 in order to actually take home $100,000 in Hawaii. This is the third-worst in USA after Oregon and Maryland….
