Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission: Republicans OK as long as they don’t spend any money defeating Hawaii Democrats
BACKGROUND: Hawaii Republican Party Sells HQ—Where is the $1.2M?
by Andrew Walden
Hawaii Republicans can do anything they want with their $546,381.14--derived from selling the Party headquarters—as long as they don’t spend it on winning state or county elections.
That’s the word from the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission.
Making quick work of it, commissioners meeting on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, unanimously provided the decision most likely to reinforce Hawaii’s one party system.
Dismissing the complaint filed by yours truly, Commission Vice Chair David Chee explained:
“…involving this complaint, there has been no state campaign spending that has occurred yet. We do not have jurisdiction to do anything with respect to this complaint except dismiss it because it doesn't seem to involve any campaign spending.”
The CSC complaint challenged the Party's failure to report the HQ sale proceeds to CSC.
Of course, state campaign spending laws deal with campaign fundraising, recordkeeping, and reporting -- not just campaign spending. But it is in the nature of a one party system that half-baked excuses go unchallenged.
This means the Hawaii CSC will do nothing to stop any embezzlement of the funds from the chaotic and depleted Hawaii Republican Party—as long as no money is spent to defeat Democrats.
A parallel FEC complaint--challenging Hawaii Republicans failure to report the HQ proceeds to the federal campaign authorities--is still pending.
