With no suspense at the top of the ticket, turnout for today’s Primary Election is very low even by Hawaii standards.
Only 269,912 votes are counted on Fourth Read -- 32.1% of the 839,618 total registered voters in Hawaii.
But many interesting down-ticket races were decided in today’s very low turnout Primary Election.
House Speaker Scott Saiki lost his Primary race against transsexual 'progressive' activist Kim Coco Iwamoto whose family owns Robert's Hawaii. As a result House Democrats will have to elect a new Speaker.
Will the Senate have a new President?
On the Senate side in SD22, President Kouchi's preferred candidate Cedric Gates beat Staceylynn Eli in the Democratic primary. But Gates has to face Republican Samantha Decorte in the General. Decorte came within 40 votes of ousting former Sen Shimabukuro in 2022.
In SD23 Democrat Ben Shafer beat Clayton Hee in the Primary. Shafer will face Republican incumbent Brenton Awa in the General. Awa has announced he plans to not campaign for the seat.
