Man sentenced to 30 years for sexual assault of a minor
News Release from Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, July 10, 2024
HONOLULU, HI- Alden Bunag, 35, was sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison today for sexual assault of a minor and child sexual abuse material related offenses.
Circuit Court Judge Fa'auuga To'oto'o sentenced Bunag to 20 years in prison for Continuous Sexual Assault of a Minor Under the Age of Fourteen Years and ten years in prison for Promoting Child Abuse in the Second Degree to be served consecutively. To'oto'o also sentenced Bunag to five years in prison for Promoting Child Abuse in the Third Degree, but that sentence will be served concurrently with the 20-year term for continuous sexual assault.
Bunag pleaded guilty to the charges in March.
"Bunag is not only a sexual predator, but a former intermediate school teacher who preyed on one of his students," said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm. "The circumstances of the case as presented by Deputy Prosecutor Ayla Weiss convinced Judge To'oto'o a lengthy sentence was warranted. We thank the FBI, U.S. Attorney's Office, HPD, and Judge To'oto'o for their work bringing this defendant to justice," Aim added.
In January, a U. S. District Judge gave Bunag a 17 year prison sentence for a related offense.
His state and federal sentences will be served concurrently.
