State and county bills loom over the future of Hawaii’s short-term vacation rental industry. Several state bills would allow counties to phase out short-term rentals and impose higher taxes on them, while a Hawaii Island initiative would likewise restrict STRs.

Joshua Montgomery, director of the Hawaii Island-based Ohana Aina Association, says the possible STR crackdown is misguided and threatens the livelihoods of resident hosts and workers.

Montgomery joins 'Hawaii Together' host Keli'i Akina, president and CEO of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, to talk about the various STR proposals and why generally they are a bad idea.
