Governor still pushing for beverage taxes
Dear Friend:
Recently, thanks to your support, the Senate Committee on Health chose not to act on the non-alcoholic beverage tax legislation. That was good news for us – but the threat still exists.
Governor Abercrombie knows the legislature hasn't supported beverage taxes, but that hasn't stopped him. Under his leadership, the Hawaii Department of Health tried unsuccessfully to insert a beverage tax into other legislation. Now, the governor is strong-arming some lawmakers to pass his proposal for a beverage tax.
If passed, the hardworking people of Hawaii would face new, discriminatory taxes on soft drinks, juices, sports drinks and flavored waters. This also means new taxes on fountain beverages at places like movie theaters and restaurants.
The No Hawaii Beverage Tax coalition is working hard to fight the Governor's tactics. Keep an eye out for updates on what happens in the legislature, and ways you can help us fight this tax. You can also visit NoHawaiiBeverageTax.com to learn more, and find us on both Twitter and Facebook. And make sure you forward this email to family and friends. Invite them to sign the petition, and join the fight against beverage taxes in Hawaii.
