Hawaii PUC Issues Interim Decision and Order in KIUC's Rate Case
News Release from KIUC, Nov 29, 2023
The Hawaiʻi Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has issued an Interim Decision and Order on Kauaʻi Island Utility Cooperative’s request for a rate increase, granting an approximate 7.95% interim increase in revenues, pending a final decision by the PUC upon completion of its review. The interim decision is aligned with a settlement agreement submitted to the PUC by KIUC and the Hawaiʻi Division of Consumer Advocacy on November 3, 2023.
KIUC’s original request, filed in December 2022, asked for an increase of 9.42% in electric revenues. This is only the second time in KIUC’s 20-year history – and the first time in 12 years – that a rate increase was sought.
The effective date of the interim increase is pending PUC review and approval of revised tariff sheets to be submitted by KIUC. The interim rates will be subject to refund pending the PUC’s final decision.
For the average residential customer using 500 kilowatt hours per month, the 7.95% increase amounts to about a $15.82 increase per month.
The full text of the Interim Decision and Order, and other information relating to the rate case, can be found on KIUC’s website.
