City announces updated and corrected ridership numbers for Skyline

(CLUE: $13B / 3666 avg daily riders = $3.5M per rider  We could have bought each rider a house near their job and a Cadillac or two to put in the garage -- and still saved billions.)

News Release from City and County of Honolulu, July 11, 2023

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) announces updated and corrected ridership numbers five days of regular fare operations.

DTS’ initial ridership numbers, released each day since the fare-free period ended on July 4, only accounted for Skyline riders who boarded directly at any of the nine Skyline Stations.  It did not include riders who initially rode TheBus and accessed Skyline using the two-and-a-half hour transfer window or any type of daily, weekly, or monthly pass products.

The corrected ridership numbers now accurately reflect all Skyline riders including direct boardings, transfer passengers, and pass product users.

“We are excited that rail ridership during our first week of paid fares actually exceeded what had been previously reported, and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify the accurate ridership of Skyline after our opening weekend and fare-free days,” said Jon Nouchi, Deputy Director of DTS. “DTS looks forward to welcoming more passengers aboard Skyline as our island residents and visitors become acquainted with Oʻahu’s newest transportation mode.”

DTS expects the number of riders to grow once public and private schools and college campuses return to session in August.

Skyline operates during the following hours:

Weekdays: 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Weekends and City Holidays: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
