Tweets highlight Matson's schizophrenic relationship with China
from Grassroot Institute, June 26, 2023
A recent tweet on Twitter by Colin Grabow highlighted what seems to be a major contradiction in the actions of Hawaii-based Jones Act carrier Matson Navigation Co. Grabow, a Grassroot Scholar and Cato Institute trade policy analyst, said, "Matson recently announced that "the $35 million conversion of one of its Jones Act-compliant ships to use LNG fuel is nearing completion. [But] missing from Matson's statement, … is any indication of which shipyard is performing this work."
That would be the Chinese state-owned shipyard COSCO in Nantong, China. Yet, as Grabow noted, a key talking point of the American Maritime Partnership — America's premier Jones Act lobby group — is that "the JA is necessary to fend off China." And who is the president of the AMP? Ku‘uhaku Park, a senior vice president at Matson. To see the whole Twitter thread, go here.
