A Gallup Poll of Hawaii adults released today shows that Hawaii has the fewest self-identified conservatives of any state in the nation—but Hawaii’s 27.9% of conservatives still outnumber the Aloha State’s 23.6% of self-identified liberals. In Hawaii, the proportion of moderates is number one in the nation, accounting for 43.3% of the population.

Hawaii is 12th in Gallup's list of top liberal states—down from 7th in Gallup’s August, 2010 polling.

Hawaii tops the nation in President Barack Obama’s approval rates.  At 65.9%, Obama gets a full 8% more support in Hawaii than in second place Maryland.

Hawaii also has the lowest rate of Obama disapproval of any state in the nation.  At 26.5% Obama is rejected by 8.7% fewer Hawaii residents than in second lowest New York.

Fully 50% of Hawaii adults lean Democratic—7th in the nation--30.4% lean Republican, 48th in the nation.

Ten percent of Hawaii adults have abandoned the Democratic party since 2008, but only 4.2% have aligned themselves with the GOP.

Polls of “adults” generally lean more Democratic and more liberal than polls of “registered voters.”  Polls of “likely voters” trend the most conservative of all.
