Remediation of cancelled ball field project continues at Hūnānāniho

News Release from Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation February 28, 2023

O‘AHU - Remediation work to remove impacts from the cancelled Waimānalo Bay Beach Park Master Plan ball field project at Hūnānāniho will continue this March, in accordance with the Settlement Agreement between the City and the Friends of Sherwood Forest.

This work is scheduled from Wednesday, March 1 through Friday, March 17, 2023, weather and site conditions permitting. The original project contractor, Kaikor, and subcontractors will be performing the work, which includes:

  • Placing large boulders for 450’ between the project site and the park access road. There will be approximately 65-75 boulders measuring 3’-5’used for this vehicular barrier.
  • Using heavy machinery to haul, store, and install the boulders. No heavy equipment will be staged onsite overnight.
  • Removing the gravel entrance, which served as a driveway for the heavy machinery. Best efforts will be made to minimize native soil disturbances.

An archeological monitor from Pacific Legacy and a cultural monitor from Moehonua Cultural Monitoring Services will be onsite monitoring work performed by the contractor. They will be joined by a special duty HPD officer.

Previous remediation work began in late Nov. 2022 when DPR staff began clean-up efforts at this culturally significant park location. Mahalo to the community for their patience and understanding while this work continues.
