Statement from Duke Aiona on the DLNR Holomua Marine 30x30 Initiative

HONOLULU, November 2, 2022 – If elected governor, I would not approve the implementation of the Holomua Marine 30x30 initiative at this time. More local community involvement and input into the creation of this initiative is needed as recent informational sessions yielded more questions than answers and our communities have strong concerns.

Since the path to ocean conservation is just as important as the goal, more transparency is required to ensure plans account for our local culture, and not simply copying a California plan for Hawaiʻi use.

Growing up in Hawaiʻi, we all understand that being good stewards of our ʻāina as well as sensible solutions are key to impactful conservation efforts.
