The Probate Court has appointed a Trustee Screening Committee to nominate three candidates to be considered by the Court for appointment as a Trustee for the Estate of Bernice Pauahi Bishop.
The Screening Committee solicited applications from individuals who possess a deep sense of commitment and the ability to ensure Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s vision and legacy are perpetuated into the future. After reviewing resumes and vision statements of 62 applicants, and conducting personal interviews with semi-finalists, the Screening Committee has determined that the following three finalists (listed in alphabetical order) best meet the Probate Court’s requirements and desirable qualities and characteristics:
- MAENETTE AH NEE-BENHAM
- MICHELLE KAUHANE
- OLIN LAGON
The optimal candidate would have:
• A recognized reputation of integrity and good character
• The capacity to fulfill the responsibilities of a fiduciary under trust law
• Respect from and for the community
• Consistent and active leadership in the community at large with specific emphasis on issues that impact the well-being of the Hawai‘i people
• A willingness and sincerity to uphold the purposes of the Kamehameha Schools as stated in Pauahi’s Will and Codicils
• A history of success in business, finance or related areas
• Received a formal education
• Outstanding personal traits including Hawaiian values such as pono (to be moral and proper), ‘imi ‘ike (to seek knowledge), laulima (to work cooperatively), lokomaika‘i (to share), na‘au pono (to possess a deep sense of justice), mālama (to care for each other), and ha‘aha‘a (to be humble)
The Probate Court required candidates to possess expertise in one or more of the following areas:
• Business Administration: to include knowledge, skills and prior successful experience in managing a large corporation;
• Finance and Investment: to include management of land and monetary assets of a multi-million dollar corporation;
• Strategic Planning and Policy Setting: to include responsibility for administering the affairs and/or setting policies for the direction and management of a large corporation or educational institution; or
• General areas of interest to Kamehameha Schools including education, law, finance or especially relevant background in governance.
PUBLIC COMMENT
The public is welcome to submit written comments on the candidates, which will be filed with the Probate Court and will become public record. Comments must be received by 4:00pm (HST) on March 20, 2023.

Kamehameha Schools quietly selecting new board trustee
SA March 19, 2023: … A quarter-century after a major scandal purged the Kamehameha Schools Board of Trustees and changed the way members are chosen, the latest version of the panel is quietly going about its business and awaiting its next member.
Three finalists are being considered to join a board that oversees one of the world’s largest charitable trusts, with a net worth of $15.1 billion and holdings that include hundreds of thousands of acres and schools on three islands giving preference to Native Hawaiian children.
They are University of Hawaii-West Oahu Chancellor Maenette Ah Nee- Benham, entrepreneur Olin Kealoha Lagon and Michelle Kauhane, senior vice president of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation.…

The new trustee will be selected by the state Probate Court to replace development consultant Lance K. Wilhelm, whose term on the board expires June 30.

The selection process, with the help of Honolulu executive search firm Inkinen, has remained the same since it was established in 2000.
But there have been pressures to change the way Kamehameha trustees are selected. In fact, both houses of the state Legislature passed a resolution in 2019 calling on the Probate Court to be more transparent in the selection of trustees and to involve more of the Kamehameha Schools community.
One of those who lobbied lawmakers for the measure is Julian Ako, a former Kamehameha School high school principal, teacher and student, who is now president of the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association-Oahu Region.
While he doesn’t have any problem with the quality of the current board or any of the prospective trustees, Ako said the selection process needs to change to align more closely with the legacy of Bernice Pauahi Bishop.
“I just think there has to be more transparency in the process and a larger role for Kamehameha stakeholders,” said Ako, who added that he wasn’t speaking for the alumni association.
In August, Probate Court Judge R. Mark Browning appointed a three-member panel to review the selection process once the current appointment has been made….

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Probate Court has appointed a Trustee Screening Committee to nominate three (3) candidates from whom the Court will select one (1) Trustee to succeed Trustee Lance K. Wilhelm, whose term will expire on June 30, 2023. The successor to Trustee Wilhelm will be appointed to fill one five (5) year term and be eligible for an additional five (5) year term, as determined by the Court.
The current Board of Trustees includes Jennifer N. Goodyear-Ka‘ōpua, Elliot K. Mills, Robert K.W.H. Nobriga, Crystal K. Rose, and Lance K. Wilhelm.
The Screening Committee consists of seven (7) volunteer community members. They are Robin K. Campaniano, Jason R. Fujimoto, Wayne Hamano, Maile Meyer, Michael E. Rawlins, Kathleen K.S.L. Thurston, and Edwin A. Vincent.
In accordance with the 1999 Master’s Report on the procedure for selection of trustees, the Screening Committee is now seeking active leaders from the community with a deep sense of commitment and willingness to carry Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s vision and legacy into the future.
