GOP CHAIR CALLS FOR REP. ELECT HANABUSA TO HELP CONVINCE REP. HIRONO TO SUPPORT OBAMA TAX BILL
News Release from www.GOPHawaii.com
Hawaii Republican Party Chair Jonah Kaauwai has called upon Congresswoman-elect Colleen Hanabusa to pressure Congresswoman Mazie Hirono to support President Obama's tax compromise measure.
"Hawaii's entire congressional delegation with the exception of Mazie Hirono has come out in support of President Obama's tax compromise package, introduced on Monday," stated Hawaii Republican Party Chairman Jonah Kaauwai. "Colleen Hanabusa campaigned on the nebulous theme of teamwork, and it is our hope that she will take this opportunity to voice her support for President Obama's hard-won compromise with Congressional Republicans. This compromise will finally give the working families and small businesses of Hawaii the certainty they have been clamoring for and prevent a disastrous increase in tax rates. Not only that, this compromise will also extend the unemployment benefits for millions of Americans.
Kaauwai continued: "We are disappointed that, despite bipartisan efforts to achieve real results for the American People, Congresswoman Hirono continues to cater to the ultra-liberal wing of the Democratic Party. We hope that Congresswoman-elect Hanabusa does not follow her lead and will instead call upon Congresswoman Hirono to end her opposition on this critical compromise and join the rest of Hawaii's delegation in supporting President Obama."
On Monday the President announced a compromise on setting the tax rates for 2011 and 2012. Congressman Charles Djou announced his support for the President the next day while Sen. Dan Inouye and Dan Akaka declared their support yesterday. This morning, however, Rep. Mazie Hirono declared her opposition to the Obama tax compromise in a House Democratic Caucus Meeting.
Representative-elect Hanabusa has not publicly taken any position on this matter, but during the campaign repeatedly stated she would work to support President Obama's agenda if elected.
