MISSION HOUSES MUSEUM RECEIVES ALEXANDER & BALDWIN GRANT

Alexander & Baldwin Foundation Grants $5,000 for Mission Houses Museum Library Digitization Project

HONOLULU, December 2, 2010 – Mission Houses Museum today announces that it has received a grant of $5,000 from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation to help match its $150,000 gift from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The funds will support the Primary Source Digitization & Internet Access project, which is in the process of digitizing the first documents of a Hawaiian written language for archiving and online access.

“We are delighted to receive the gift from A&B Foundation,” stated Dr. Tom Woods, executive director of the Mission Houses Museum, “It is the support and generosity of organizations like this that will ensure that an invaluable part of Hawaiian history will live on in posterity and be accessible to all.”

Mission Houses Museums has additionally received $5,000 grants from G. N. Wilcox Trust, the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation and $50,000 from the Atherton Family Foundation.

Mission Houses Museum, located in Honolulu’s Historic Capitol District, is known worldwide as the place where the Hawaiian written language was developed. The museum preserves the oldest and second oldest houses in Hawai‘i and the largest collection of Hawaiian language books in the world.
