‘OahuJoe’ TikTok video on Hawaii housing draws more than a million views

In just 13 seconds, Joe Kent of the Grassroot Institute explains why relatively modest homes in Hawaii are so darn expensive

by Chelsi Molina, Grassroot Institute, October 15, 2021

More than 1.1 million people worldwide just got an idea of what kind of home you can acquire in Hawaii if you are willing to drop about $1 million.

“OahuJoe” — aka Joe Kent, executive vice president of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii — explains during a very brief video posted last month (September) on TikTok how strict land-use laws contribute to the state’s high cost of housing.

“I stood outside my mother-in-law’s house in Liliha, which is valued at about $1 million, and just toured around the outside,” Kent said yesterday. “I never thought a million people would watch. But I’m glad I talked about how Hawaii has the strictest land-use regulations in the nation.

“Also, in the comments, I said, ‘5% of the land in Hawaii is zoned for housing. The rest is zoned for open space.’ FYI, when the video creator posts a comment, it is pinned as the top comment, so everyone sees it.”

Oh, and by the way, the five-bedroom, three-bath, 1,500-square-foot house is not for sale. Watch the video below.
