HCF: Blank votes beat all BoE Candidates
By News Release @ 12:28 PM :: 6401 Views :: Energy, Environment

WE'VE SEEN THAT THE 45-YEAR OLD SYSTEM OF ELECTING CANDIDATES IS NOT WORKING.

  • Can you name YOUR BOE representatives?

  • What do you know about their qualifications or backgrounds?

  • According to a Star-Bulletin/KITV 4 News poll conducted in 2002, 69% of those polled felt they did not have enough information about the candidates to make a good choice.

  • In the 2008 at-large election, "blank votes" exceeded the votes for each of the three candidates elected to the BOE.  33.8% of the votes (312,965 votes) were "blank".

  • Many people vote based on name recognition and similarity of backgrounds, but not candidate views and qualifications.

Given what's at stake, let's ensure the Board of Education receives the same level of scrutiny as that applied to the selection of the UH Board of Regents, judges and other important boards and commissions.

VOTE YES on the constitutional amendment for an appointed Board of Education.
