Let's Build A System That Focuses On The Kids
The Current Board Isn't Doing This
From http://www.hawaiichildrenfirst.org/
The Board is in charge of the school system. Its responsibilities include selecting the Superintendent; setting policies and priorities; approving how resources are distributed; and negotiating with the unions on things that matter in the classroom.
Despite its influence, the system has clearly failed the children, producing FURLOUGH FRIDAYS and MEDIOCRE TO POOR RESULTS.
-
In a recent Board meeting, the elected Board admitted Hawaii is a "poor performing state" and that it was not satisfied with the current pace of reform.
-
Last year, only 36% of Hawaii schools met adequate yearly progress. 35% of the students were not proficient in reading; 56% of students were not proficient in mathematics.
-
Only 13% of students attend college and graduate on-time.
-
Employers continue to tell us that our high school and college graduates are not prepared for the workforce.
After 45 years of an elected Board, it's about time for a change.
VOTE YES on the constitutional amendment for an appointed Board.
