RGA Highlights Duke Aiona’s Education Plan

From http://www.riseandshinehi.com

The Republican Governors Association released a new television advertisement today highlighting Duke Aiona’s education plan.  The ad can be viewed at www.riseandshinehi.com.

“Duke’s a leader who has a plan to renew education in Hawaii,” said RGA spokesman Chris Schrimpf.  “His Power of Aloha plan is the kind of independent idea that can transform lives.”

A transcript of the ad is below.

There’s a reason for Independent leader Duke Aiona’s innovative ideas for education.

“My mom was an educator for well over forty years.”

Duke Aiona advocates the Power of Aloha program. It provides hundreds of students with lessons about character and making smart choices.

“It’s easier to build strong children than it is to fix broken adults.”

Rise and shine, Hawaii.

Ensuring a World Class Education

Education

Duke Aiona believes that the education of our children is the fundamental building block of society.  To achieve true greatness in our public schools, simply spending more money is not the answer.  There must be fundamental reforms to the education system.

To improve the education system, the state needs to empower and reward teachers, create a supportive and safe environment conducive to learning, and ensure that money is spent directly at the school-student level.

Duke Aiona believes that government should ensure a world class education by:

  • •Conducting a comprehensive, independent audit of the Department of Education;

  • •Lifting the cap on the number of charter schools allowed in the state, and ensure equal funding per student;

  • •Mandating 90% of education funding is spent at the school-student level;

  • •Increasing the number of magnet schools and expand vocation education;

  • •Targeting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs in all schools by 2012;

  • •Expanding pre-kindergarten preparation through income tax credits.
