DCCC CLAIM: “Charles Djou voted against Hawaii’s schools.”

THE FACTS: Charles Djou supports Hawaii’s schools 100 percent.  He voted against HR 1586 because it was financed on the backs of our nation’s neediest families, stripping $12 billion from the food stamp program and taking away $1.1 billion in tax breaks for the working poor.

HR 1586 cut nearly $12 billion from the federal food stamp program and another $1.1 billion from the earned income tax credit, which is a tax credit that benefits the working poor: “The bulk of the money comes from something Pelosi’s office chose not to mention in the press release -- almost $12 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (more commonly known as the food stamp program) beginning in 2014. Another $1.1 billion would come from cuts to advanced refundability of the earned income tax credit starting in 2011. The earned income credit is a tax credit that benefits the working poor. Several billion dollars more would come from a variety of spending cuts known as rescissions. The cuts were made at a time when a record number of Americans are relying on food stamps and were used to help states cover Medicaid expenses and teacher salaries: “Democrats are poised to pass a bill today that will provide $26 billion in additional funding to help states cover Medicaid expenses and teacher salaries. THE FACTS: Charles Djou voted against HR 4213 because altogether, the bill would provide for a net tax increase of $40 billion.  Overall, the bill would cost $226 billion, with $191 billion in higher spending; resulting in a deficit increase of $134 billion. (Congressional Budget Office)
