GOVERNOR LINGLE CONGRATULATES U.S. LITTLE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS – THE WAIPIO ALL-STARS

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle congratulated the Waipio All-Stars Little League team for winning the U.S. Championship Little League World Series title today, in a 10-0 shutout victory over the team from Pearland, Texas.

“All of Hawai‘i is extremely proud of the Waipio All-Stars who will now represent the United States for the 2010 Little League World Series Championship title,” said Governor Lingle.  “Over the past week, we have seen Waipio play with heart and determination, demonstrating outstanding athleticism and teamwork.  They have shown tremendous respect and aloha for their competitors and for the sport of baseball that they clearly love.

“I can’t wait for tomorrow’s championship where I know Waipio will continue to play at the highest level as they pursue their second Little League World Series championship. Special kudos to the coaches and volunteer staff who led by example.”

Governor Lingle encourages the community to support the players’ families and coaches in defraying some of the cost involved in playing in this year’s Little League World Series.

The team, accompanied by a loyal contingent of family and supporters, has been on the road since August 4. The media has reported that the families have incurred expenses for travel, accommodations and meals in excess of $10,000 per player.

Tax deductible donations may be sent to the Hawai‘i Children’s Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.  All contributions will go to the Waipio team.  Checks should be made out to the Hawai‘i Children’s Foundation. Please indicate on the check that the donation is for the Waipio All-Stars Little League Team.
