Post-Election 2020 Update from Hawaii Republican Party

Aloha Republicans,   Nov 7, 2020

It has been a roller coaster of an election cycle!  First I want to congratulate all our incumbents (Senator Kurt Fevella, Rep Gene Ward, Rep Bob McDermott, Rep Val Okimoto and Rep Lauren Matsumoto) for winning their races despite being targeted by well funded opponents! I would also like to congratulate our slate of candidates up and down the ballot for running amazing campaigns.  We registered a record number of Republicans this year and it is something to build on.  I look forward to sharing a more detailed analysis on our local races this coming week.   But I know we are all eager to get updates on our President.

"For the news media to call this election for Joe Biden when there are still hundreds of thousands of votes outstanding in battleground states does an injustice to the American people and our free and fair election system.

In Pennsylvania, election officials blatantly ignored a Supreme Court order to allow Republican poll watchers in to observe  voting count rooms; particularly in Philadelphia.  There are still more than 100,000 votes outstanding in this state.

In Nevada there are still 50,000 mail and 66,500 same day registration. There are a lot of ballots to still be counted with several irregularities on the ground in Nevada.  More than 3,000 people who were not eligible to vote did vote.  This is a race that is in the 1.5% range in Joe Biden's favor.  It's too close to call.  The Attorney General has been notified.

Georgia is going to a recount; which the Georgia Secretary of State said yesterday. With many military and overseas ballots still outstanding, it could be a few weeks until the final result is known. Illegal ballot harvesting occurred in three very heavy Democratic counties in the state of Georgia.

Wisconsin is going to a recount and that recount will begin soon.

In Arizona the President continues to make progress with each ballot drop that happens.  Biden's lead at this point is approximately 20,484 votes; and that number was five times just five days ago.  There is still an excess of 100,000 votes to be counted in Arizona.  An automatic recount comes in at 0.1% and can be requested at .5%.

In Hawaii, we are standing for transparency, free and fair elections and the assurance that every legal vote will be counted, that legal votes can be cast only once; and illegal votes are to be discarded.  With different pockets of voting irregularities around the country, it is our duty to ensure for the American people that this process is full of light, truth, transparency and freedom.  This is the foundation of America. The moment that is taken away from us is the moment we lose what America is."

- Chairman Shirlene D. Ostrov, Nov 7, 2020

Statement from President Donald J. Trump:

“We all know why Joe Biden is rushing to falsely pose as the winner, and why his media allies are trying so hard to help him: they don’t want the truth to be exposed. The simple fact is this election is far from over. Joe Biden has not been certified as the winner of any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts, or states where our campaign has valid and legitimate legal challenges that could determine the ultimate victor. In Pennsylvania, for example, our legal observers were not permitted meaningful access to watch the counting process.  Legal votes decide who is president, not the news media.

“Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated. The American People are entitled to an honest election: that means counting all legal ballots, and not counting any illegal ballots. This is the only way to ensure the public has full confidence in our election. It remains shocking that the Biden campaign refuses to agree with this basic principle and wants ballots counted even if they are fraudulent, manufactured, or cast by ineligible or deceased voters. Only a party engaged in wrongdoing would unlawfully keep observers out of the count room – and then fight in court to block their access.

“So what is Biden hiding? I will not rest until the American People have the honest vote count they deserve and that Democracy demands.”

- President Donald J. Trump

Updated route will provide more safety

From Young Progressives Demanding Action, November 6, 2020

With Biden in the lead (and still increasing his share of votes) in Pennsylvania and Georgia, it looks like the presidential election will be decided in favor of the Democrats. This does not change our plan for the next four years, which is to organize, build power and win on progressive issues at all levels of government.

And action one along that path is the People's Alignment March, happening Saturday, November 7, from 10am–2pm. As you can see by the map above, the route has been changed to primarily follow Kapiʻolani Blvd. This is primarily out of safety concern for the participants. Queen Street has very few paved sidewalks and limited room to walk, while Kapiʻolani is a common march route. We'll also get better visibility that way.

While the route is shorter now, it's still important to make sure you bring water, sunscreen, hats and your mask! Social distancing will be enforced. Hope to see you there!

Photo of march from YPDA:

This march kicks off a campaign to support the development of a People's Budget that puts our public money toward the things the public actually cares about: climate justice, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, indigenous rights, economic justice, immigrants rights, housing justice, gender equality, healthcare justice, and labor justice—fundamental human rights essential for our health, safety and prosperity.

We are calling on the Honolulu City Council and the Mayor to enter into a participatory budget process with their constituents—we, the people—where our values can be brought forward and championed for inclusion in the allocation of city resources. We hope this can become a model for the whole state.

Congratulations to Adrian and Jeanné on their wins!

Former YPDA board president Adrian Tam defeated Proud Boys chapter founder and white supremacist Nick Ochs for the Hawaiʻi State House seat from District 22 (Waikiki, Ala Moana), while former YPDA at-large board member Jeanné Kapela easily won her race to represent Hawaiʻi State House District 5 (Naʻalehu, Ocean View, Capt. Cook, Kealakekua, Kailua-Kona).

Both bring much needed diversity and to the state legislature, along with a young person's perspective. We can't wait to work with both of them in advancing people- and planet-first legislation. In this time of economic recession and social strife, it is imperative that we take our seat at the policy-making table.
